Goodbye Adelina is an exhibition dedicated to my grandmother Adelina Saldana Farmer and the relationship we shared; illustrating my journey into becoming her caregiver as she faced Alzheimer’s disease.
Having to care for a loved one experiencing an illness like Alzheimer’s disease; witnessing as they slowly progress into a childlike state, while at the same time trying to maintain your own mental and physical health as caregiver is painful.
In Goodbye Adelina I use cookware to represent a defining trait of Adelina’s identity and personal history as homemaker but, by making the cookware resemble colorful children’s toys – I illustrate the breakdown of her personality. This cookware then becomes an expression of dysfunction — slipping further from her former recognizable self.
Goodbye Adelina is a solo show by Allysha Farmer and will be open at January Studio and Gallery 7-11pm Saturday October 14th, 119 W Lachapelle. SATX 78204.
